Monthly Speaker Meeting @ Andrés Restaurant – March 28, 2019

Speaker: Barbara Lloyd and Mike Bear from Ocean Sanctuaries Inc. (a 501c3). Topic: A general overview of Ocean Sanctuaries’ Citizen Science for SCUBA Divers programs.

Abstract: Ocean Sanctuaries – Citizen Science for SCUBA Divers programs:

  • Who is Ocean Sanctuaries and why are they important?
  • What kinds of programs do they run and why?
  • What is the importance of technology in citizen science and how is Ocean Sanctuaries using it?

In order to answer those questions Mike will offer and overview of our Yukon Marine Life Survey Project and our Marine Citizen Science Certificate. Barbara will do a deeper dive into how technology is being used to advance population analysis for marine species.

Bio: Barbara Lloyd, founder of Ocean Sanctuaries. She has been an underwater photographer and videographer, as well as a marine citizen diver for almost 15 years.

Michael bear, co-founder and President of Ocean Sanctuaries. AAUS Scientific Diver who has been diving in Southern California for almost 20 years. Both Michael Bear and Barbara Lloyd have been Marine Citizen Science Diver with Yukon ARMP, SD Coastkeeper, REEF, RCCA, CA Academy of the Sciences (AAUS Scientific Diver), and Ocean Sanctuaries.
