Into the Trench: Celebrating the Golden Anniversary of Man's Deepest Dive by USN Bathyscaph Trieste
It was a rare fusion of basic physics, imaginative design, and daring
implementation. On the morning of January 23, 1960, two men began a
journey of 35,840 feet from the surface of the sea to the deepest
place in any ocean on Earth. There would be this one chance only.
More than a mile from the bottom, a tremendous "BANG" shook the craft,
and almost made them stop. The pilot considered, and they continued.
They made it to the bottom. And back again. The round trip adventure
has never been repeated. What was accomplished during the run-up to
and conduct of the "Deep Dive" had implications that touched academia,
industries, the U.S. Navy, and the economies of our country and the
world, both then and today. It was a national effort that should be
recognized.
Join us as the pilot of that dive, Don Walsh Commander, USN (ret),
recounts his experience, "heroic" in the truest sense of the word.
Join us as the Chief of the Boat, John Michel, tells how he worked to
invent or upgrade submersible systems to work at 1,000 atmospheres of
pressure, and more than once gambled his life to guarantee the safety
of his shipmates. Thus began the era of manned deep submersibles.
Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as tales of this singular
adventure of great exploration are recounted. The Trieste's homeport
was San Diego, and these men were, and many still are, neighbors.
Speakers will include Don Walsh, Commander, USN (ret), pilot of the
deepest dive; John Michel, Chief of the Boat; and Capt. Charles
Bishop, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, sponsor of the U.S.
Navy's acquisition and upgrade of the bathyscaph Trieste. Displays
will include blueprints, vintage photographs, and actual components.
Shake hands with pilots of later bathyscaph missions. View posters of
new concept vehicles designed to once again enable humans to
personally explore the trench floors. The MTS/Trieste event committee
is chaired by Capt. Charles MacVean (USN, ret), and is co-sponsored by
the Deep Submersible Pilots Association, Tony Dunn, President.
Additional committee members are Joe Hughes, Will Forman, and Kevin
Hardy. Other marine related professional societies, and members in
the deep submergence and ocean industry will also be invited.
With this event, the Marine Technology Society will release it's
newest edition of its Journal, dedicated to the deepest dive of the
bathyscaph Trieste, with a look at what preceded that historic dive,
what followed, where current hadal technology and scientific research
is focused, and what might transpire in the next 50 years.
MTS/Trieste event supporters include Rolex, DeepSea Power & Light,
Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UCSD, and SeaBotix.
This is a rare gathering you'll want to be a part of and remember.
Be sure to make your reservations by January 18.
