Captain Donald R. Mathiowetz is a 1962 graduate of the University of Minnesota, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was commissioned as an Ensign that year through the Regular NROTC Program. Following Submarine School in New London, Connecticut, he served for two years aboard the USS Rasher (AGSS-269).

He also served aboard the USS James K. Polk (SSBN-645), USS Barb (SSN-596), as Engineer Officer on USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN-630) and as Executive Officer on USS Aspro (SSN-648).

Captain Mathiowetz was Commanding Officer of USS Puffer (SSN-652) from October, 1976 to February, 1980. He then reported to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Engineering and Systems for three years in the Pentagon.

He returned to San Diego in 1983, and served on the Board of Inspection and Survey, as Submarine Group Five Operations Officer, and Submarine and ASW Instructor at the Tactical Training Group, Pacific, before retiring from the Navy in August, 1991.

He enjoyed a second career, teaching high school science and mathematics for 13 years before retiring in June, 2004. He has been a Maritime Museum docent since January 2005.
